Q1 are a brand owned by PPM Industries who has over 25 years experience producing masking products already. PPM have seen an huge increase over the last few years of sprayers using their Q1 masking tapes within the residential industry so decided to develop a new range of tapes better suited to them!

PPM did their research and a few months ago launched 2 new tapes to the market for testing. We gave samples to a group of over 20 sprayers to use on their projects, to test and put them to the test into real life scenarios.

What are we doing with Q1?

We have been testing both of the new masking tapes that Q1 have launched for our industry. Now, we do a lot of testing ourselves of products we are interested in trying and look for lots of different things when we test. A product needs to come up trumps on a few different levels for us to start using it, and even when we do we need to use it over different seasons and environments before we will take it and move over from a brand we know and trust.

We did the testing ourselves too but didn’t release our thoughts to the group so as not to influence the results. We will be bring a series of posts of the coming weeks showcasing the thoughts of the testing group and what the overall thought of the NEW Q1 tapes from the perspective of the group is.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” parallax=”content-moving” css=”.vc_custom_1538549985064{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

So what are we looking for in a masking tape

We wanted to give you an insight into some of the things that we were looking for in the tape:

  • How sticky/tacky – believe it or not some of the less tacky tapes actually stick better
  • How it tears – does it tear nicely or ribbon
  • How it pulls off the roll
  • How does it work on the hand maskers – does it fit the major hand masking brands, does it pull onto the paper nice and straight.
  • How well does it stick to multiple surfaces – depending on the use of the tape we want it to be able to stick to new plaster, existing plaster, woodwork, windows, carpet, tile & brickwork possibly but that’s not so likely
  • How well does it pull off – does it tear/ribbon, does it pull paint – this isn’t always down to the tape as its sometimes the preparation itself
  • is it UV resistant on glass – believe me we have learnt this the hard way and spent hours scraping tape off a Georgian house with what felt like hundreds of windows, this cost us dearly in the early days.
  • And finally, price – this doesn’t always have to be a major factor in our opinion however it does have to be competitive if it’s comparable to another tape in the market.

We really enjoyed seeing the testing posts and it’s interesting how everyone’s view on testing and what they are looking for in a product is different. I guess we have just been doing it along time now and there needs to be a combination of a few different factors for us as its not one dimensional.

Over the coming weeks leading up to the Painting & Decorating Show we will show the testing done by the group on various projects including our own testing and give the overall thoughts and impressions on the 2 tapes.

As with all products and testing, this is just the thoughts of the group, the products need further testing over the coming months as we go through different seasons. We have had a very good summer in terms of weather so have had almost perfect temperatures for testing tapes so we will be testing more.

There has been a lot of controversy within the groups over the last few months regarding the new multi purpose tape and the automotive tape which we have had long conversations about. There is a difference in the 2 tapes even though they look the same. Maybe head office will listen to us and look to change the colour of the spraying multi purpose to lessen the confusion for everyone.

We have been working alongside Q1 to help them develop the range of masking products for our industry as we believe that its the whole masking system that will give PPM the edge over their competitors.

At the end of the day we believe that no 1 product suits everyone and it’s great to have various options in the market for us to choose from. You may like the product or you may not but its great to have choices.!
